Hi there! I’m Jessica Luu.
I’m a design leader with over 12 years of experience building products that help people make sense of really complex data. With a background in Cognitive Psychology and an M.S. in Human-Computer Interaction, I’ve spent my career as a fierce advocate for the person on the other side of the screen.
Whether I’m advocating for the user within an 80-person multidisciplinary team at Roche to build digital pathology tools from scratch , or scaling a security app to 9 million users, my goal is always the same: to take the 'scary' out of high-stakes technology and make it feel intuitive and human. I specialize in bridging the gap between technical complexity - like genomic sequencing or cybersecurity - and the real people who use those systems.
Off-screen, I’m an avid runner, a backcountry backpacker, and scuba diver specializing in underwater photography. I love navigating complex environments - whether that’s 60 feet underwater, on a long-distance trail, or in the middle of a challenging design sprint.
If all this sounds good to you, let’s connect!
Design Lead for an early-stage advanced digital pathology staining platform built from the ground up, guiding user needfinding and defining experience vision while aligning an 80+ member multidisciplinary team across science, software, and hardware.
Design Lead for genomic sequencing initiatives, leading end-to-end experience design and human factors strategy across IVD/RUO assays and companion software (Avenio Connect) from early concept through regulatory approval.
Partnered with engineering, clinical, and regulatory teams to align with IEC 62366-1, FDA guidance, and WCAG 2.1 AA - reducing usability risk and minimizing late-stage validation rework.
Managed and mentored a team of 4 designers supporting genomic sequencing initiatives, establishing design standards, prioritization frameworks, and career development plans.
Redesigned the Malwarebytes website to improve customer discoverability, SEO optimization, and generate more leads. Managed an offshore agency to ensure the timely and quality delivery of designs.
Conceptualized and shipped a security browser extension for Firefox, Chrome, and (still developing) Safari, with an average of 9 million weekly users for Chrome and an average 4.1 star rating.
Conceptualized and shipped an internal marketing campaign management platform to streamline the organization’s process of communicating campaign messages to our users.
Grew a team of 1 junior designer to a diverse team of 5 designers covering 3 product areas – mobile security, desktop security, and desktop VPN privacy.
Revamped the design process to integrate it more seamlessly into the agile method, increasing transparency in design decisions and streamlining the timeline of deliverables.
Co-led the redesign of a product overhaul: Unifi Workspace, a desktop application for radiologists, referring physicians, and technologists to view and analyse patients’ mammography, MRI, and ultrasound studies.. Enforcing end-to-end UX throughout the product cycle, gathering user needs and formulating requirements, concept development & ideations, user testing, and prototyping.
Co-designed the Pulse iPad application, designing the transactions detail experience of Oracle’s Cloud Management Portal customers.
Led the design of Pulse’s web application, championing responsive design and enforcing design trends. Ensured all features of the product passed accessibility guidelines.
Responsible for the visual design of Pulse. Provided style guides and iconography.
